Seminole County Fire Department Honored for Saving Life After Severe Asthma Attack

In a heartwarming reunion, the Seminole County Fire Department (SCFD) crews and staff from AdventHealth Altamonte came together to celebrate a life saved. Herbert Dixon, a 52-year-old Seminole County resident, experienced a severe asthma attack that led to respiratory arrest on August 19, which could have changed the lives of him and his family forever.

A Life-Threatening Moment

The distressing event unfolded just before 11 a.m. on the 19th when Dixon, who had a history of asthma, suddenly found himself struggling to breathe. His wife immediately noticed his face turning purple and that he was unable to use his inhaler.

When SCFD crews arrived at the scene, they found Dixon sitting unresponsive against his bed and dresser, struggling with shallow breaths. As they assessed his condition, he took one final breath and then stopped breathing entirely. Dixon had gone into respiratory arrest, a life-threatening condition that required immediate intervention.

Swift Action and Advanced Life Saving Protocols

Without hesitation, the Seminole County Fire Department crew members sprang into action, following Advanced Life Saving (ALS) protocols. They administered respirations using a bag valve mask (BVM) and quickly established an intravenous line via intraosseous (I/O) access, allowing them to administer lifesaving medications.

Dixon’s condition was critical, and the SCFD crew knew they had a narrow window of opportunity to restore his breathing and stabilize him. As they rushed him to AdventHealth Altamonte, the team continued to provide advanced care, including several rounds of emergency medications that helped open Dixon’s airways and stabilize his vitals.

Dixon began to breathe on his own. By the time they arrived at the hospital, he had regained consciousness, and his vital signs had improved dramatically. The SCFD team had successfully managed the severe asthma attack, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.

A Heartfelt Reunion

On a recent afternoon, Dixon was reunited with the heroes who helped save his life. The reunion ceremony at AdventHealth Altamonte was filled with emotion as Dixon thanked the firefighters and healthcare staff who worked tirelessly to bring him back from the brink.

“I feel blessed to be here another day, and I thank the Seminole County Fire crews and the healthcare staff at AdventHealth,” Dixon said, visibly moved. “Seeing them is surreal and makes me so thankful for my life, as I know how precious and precarious life can be.”

Celebrating the Life-Saving Teamwork

The remarkable recovery is a testament to the training, expertise, and teamwork of both the Seminole County Fire Department and AdventHealth Altamonte. The collaboration between these two organizations not only saved Dixon’s life but also serves as a reminder of the vital role that first responders and medical professionals play in our communities.

The Seminole County Fire Department continues to provide top-notch emergency care across the county, and their response to this crisis highlights the critical importance of ALS protocols, rapid assessment, and immediate intervention in life-threatening situations. The dedication of these public servants ensures that lives are saved every day.

For Herbert Dixon, this life-saving experience has reinforced how precious and fragile life can be. Thanks to the quick actions of the SCFD and the expert care provided by AdventHealth, Dixon is here today to share his incredible story, and to remind all of us about the extraordinary work of those who stand ready to serve in our time of need.
