Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) will receive a $2.7 million grant—the largest single-program grant in the district’s history—to establish the Bear Brigade Fire Academy at Winter Springs High School.
According to a new release from SCPS, this groundbreaking program, set to debut in the 2025-2026 school year, aims to prepare students for careers in the high-demand field of fire and emergency services.
A Transformational Opportunity for Students and the Community
The program is designed to meet the growing need for skilled professionals in fire and emergency services while empowering students with the knowledge and practical skills to excel in this critical field.
“This program is a game-changer for our students and community,” Superintendent Serita Beamon said. “The Bear Brigade Fire Academy will offer unparalleled opportunities for our students to gain hands-on experience, work with state-of-the-art equipment, and enter a career field that is in high demand both locally and nationally. We are grateful for the investment in our students and their futures.”
Cutting-Edge Features of the Bear Brigade Fire Academy
Students enrolled in the Bear Brigade Fire Academy will benefit from:
- State-of-the-art training facilities and simulation labs: These cutting-edge resources will allow students to experience real-world emergency scenarios in a controlled, educational environment.
- Hands-on field experiences: Students will engage directly in the daily responsibilities of fire and emergency service professionals, gaining invaluable practical exposure.
- Collaboration with Seminole State College: A partnership with Seminole State College will provide a seamless transition for students pursuing advanced education and certifications, ensuring a competitive edge in the workforce.
Comprehensive Curriculum for Career Readiness
The Bear Brigade Fire Academy’s curriculum will begin in ninth grade and culminate in dual enrollment courses during students’ senior year. This collaboration with Seminole State College offers graduates a direct pathway to certification and career readiness, particularly for those entering Seminole State’s Fire Academy. By equipping students with both foundational and advanced knowledge, the academy will position them as top candidates for roles in fire and emergency services.
Local and National Impact
As the Bear Brigade Fire Academy prepares to enroll its inaugural class in fall 2025, SCPS continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing innovative educational opportunities that align with workforce demands. The academy is expected to not only enhance career prospects for students but also strengthen the local and national talent pipeline in fire and emergency services.
“This program represents the perfect blend of academic rigor, career preparation, and community impact,” Pete Gaffney Principal of Winter Springs High School said. “We are thrilled to offer this academy and are excited to see our students rise to the challenge of becoming tomorrow’s heroes.”
